New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 9 congratulated H.E. Tshering Tobgay and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) for winning the parliamentary elections in Bhutan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X:
"Heartiest congratulations to my friend @tsheringtobgay and the People’s Democratic Party for winning the parliamentary elections in Bhutan. Look forward to working together again to further strengthen our unique ties of friendship and cooperation."
Mr. Tshering Tobgay was the Prime Minister of Bhutan from July 2013 to August 2018. He is currently elected as the Prime Minister of Bhutan on 09 Jan 2024.
He is the leader of the PDP. He was also the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly from March 2008 to April 2013.
Congratulating him, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he is looking forward to working together again to further strengthen our unique ties of friendship and cooperation.
Tobgay, aged 58, is poised to assume the role of Prime Minister once again. In his PDP manifesto, he referenced government data indicating that one in eight individuals faced challenges in fulfilling their fundamental requirements for sustenance and essential items.
Around half a million voters participated in electing parliament members from a roster of 94 candidates put forth by the Bhutan Tendrel Party (BTP) and the PDP. The initial round of voting in November led to the elimination of three other parties, including the incumbent center-left Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa party.
