New Delhi: The President of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Dennis Francis met with the President of India Droupadi Murmu and External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar on January 24.

The President UNGA Dennis Francis called on the President of India Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 24.

Welcoming the President of the UNGA to India, President of India Droupadi Murmu appreciated the important initiatives being undertaken under Mr. Dennis Francis' Presidency, including on climate change and women's empowerment.

President Murmu agreed that the theme chosen for the Presidency of 78th UNGA, "Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity", is the need of the hour, at a time when the world is facing several challenges.

Taking the social media platform X, the President's Secretariat of India posted:

"Mr Dennis Francis, President of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Murmu appreciated the important initiatives being undertaken under his Presidency, including on climate change and women's empowerment."

The President Murmu added that the General Assembly can contribute to supporting the Global South, including the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Mrs. Murmu appreciated the attention given to reform of the UN Security Council, which is also a critical issue for the Global South.

On January 24, the President of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Dennis Francis met with External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar.

Both leaders held a wide ranging discussion on global peace and security challenges, including the situation in Gaza, Ukraine, & Haiti; the growing role of UNGA in these challenging times, United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reform and need for stronger multilateralism.

Mr. Dennis Francis also reiterated his appreciation on India's successful G-20 Presidency.

He also said that he is looking forward to India's continued constructive support for the work of the General Assembly, including the upcoming Summit of the Future.

Posting on social media platform X, Mr. Dennis Francis wrote:

"Always a pleasure to meet with @DrSJaishankar, External Affairs Minister of India 🇮🇳. Reiterated my appreciation on India’s successful G20 Presidency. Had a wide ranging discussion on global peace and security challenges, including the situation in Gaza, Ukraine, & Haiti; the growing role of #UNGA in these challenging times, UNSC reform and need for stronger multilateralism. I look forward to India’s continued constructive support for the work of the General Assembly, including the upcoming Summit of the Future."

During the meeting, EAM Jaishankar appreciated UNGA President's position on need for urgency of reforms in international institutions especially the UN Security Council.

EAM Jaishankar also said that his positive sentiments for India's G-20 Presidency and Voice of Global South Summits were notable.

EAM further said that India will strongly support the Summit of the Future Process under his leadership to achieve equitable and ambitious outcomes.

EAM Jaishankar also wrote on X about his meeting with the President of UNGA:

"So glad to welcome @un_pga Dennis Francis this afternoon in New Delhi. His positive sentiments for our G20 Presidency and Voice of Global South Summits were notable. They have strengthened multilateralism. Appreciated his position on need for urgency of reforms in international institutions especially the UN Security Council.
