New Delhi: Prime Minister of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana Brigadier (Retd.) Mark Phillips called on President of India Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on February 7.
President Droupadi Murmu appreciated Guyana's efforts and leadership in the areas of climate change, green energy and sustainable development.
Taking the social media platform X, the President's Secretariat of India posted on February 7:
"Prime Minister Mark Phillips of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The President appreciated Guyana’s efforts and leadership in the areas of climate change, green energy, and sustainable development."
Welcoming Prime Minister Mark Phillips and his delegation, President Droupadi Murmu said that despite being geographically distant, India and Guyana are connected by virtue of our colonial past; our diverse and multicultural societies; and the strong bonds of culture, traditions and language with the sizeable Indian diaspora community that has made Guyana its home for nearly two centuries.
President Murmu said that there is a need to further diversify in the bilateral trade basket between two countries.
She also said that there is also immense potential to improve collaboration in the fields of Ayurveda, bio-fuels and agriculture - especially in millets.
She further added that by working together in these areas, the two countries can address the challenges posed by climate change and by food insecurity.
President Murmu congratulated Guyana on assuming the rotating Presidency of CARICOM, as well as this month’s Presidency of the United Nations Security Council.
As leading members of the Global South, the President said that both our countries are string advocates for reformed multilateralism.
President Droupadi Murmu also appreciated Guyana's efforts and leadership in the areas of climate change, green energy, and sustainable development.
Prime Minister of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana Brigadier (Retd.) Mark Phillips also met with Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankar on February 8 at Upa-Rashtrapati Nivas.
During discussion they underlined the connection between India and Guyana built on their rich cultural link and heritage. They also shared commitment of both nations towards sustainable development, green energy and combating climate change.

While the Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar delivered the inaugural address at the World Sustainable Development Summit 2024 organised by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) at India Habitat Centre in New Delhi on February 7.
Prime Minister of Guyana Mark Phillips and Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav were also present on the occasion.

On February 7, External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar met with Prime Minister of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana Brigadier (Retd.) Mark Phillips and discussed issues like economy, energy, security and development cooperation.
Both leaders also exchanged views on the CARICOM and UN.
