New Delhi: Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi extended congratulations to Excellency Donald Tusk on becoming as Prime Minister of Poland on December 14.

Extending congratulations, Prime Minister Modi said that he is looking forward to working together to further deepen the longstanding and friendly relations between India and Poland.

Taking the social media platform X, PM Narendra Modi wrote:

"Congratulations, Excellency Donald Tusk on your appointment as Prime Minister of Poland. I look forward to working together to further deepen the longstanding and friendly relations between India and Poland."

"The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has congratulated Excellency Donald Tusk on being elected as Prime Minister of Poland", sharing the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tweet, Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in its statement on December 14.

A Polish politician, Donald Franciszek Tusk, who has been serving as the Prime Minister of Poland since 2023, having previously served in the position from 2007 to 2014. He also served as President of the European Council from 2014 to 2019. He was also the President of the European People's Party (EPP) from 2019 to 2022.

India-Poland relations are very deep and have traditionally been close, friendly and characterized by goodwill and cooperation. 

India and Poland established their diplomatic relations in 1954 and the Indian Embassy in Warsaw was opened in 1957. The two countries shared common ideological perceptions, based on their opposition to colonialism, imperialism and racism.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Poland JanuszPiechocinski led a large business delegation to India in January 2015 to attend the Vibrant Gujarat Summit in Gandhinagar and met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Chief Minister of Gujarat. A number of areas of cooperation were discussed in the meeting with PM, including coal and mining, food processing, automobiles, defence and IT.

On March 25 in 2015, the "Make in India" campaign was formally launched in Warsaw. Speaking to a distinguished gathering at a "Make in India" evening, the Chief Guest, Polish Deputy Minister of Economy, Mr Jerzy Pietrewicz, applauded India’s outreach programmes in Poland and underlined the Polish government’s complete support.

Mr. Pietrewicz said that he was personally enthused by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for transforming India into an economic behemoth. In response to India’s initiative, Poland's Deputy Prime Minister Piechocinski, announced a "Go India" programme in April 2015 that will facilitate and incentivise Polish companies to engage with India.

First Deputy Prime Minister of Poland, Prof. Piotr Glinski, led a strong delegation of more than 50 officials and businessmen for the Make in India Week in February 2016. Prof. Glinski called on Prime Minister Modi and discussed a roadmap of bilateral economic cooperation.
