Dhaka: A round-table discussion on the "Impact of Climate Change on Women and Girls" was organised by United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and an international organisation of seven South Asian and Southeast Asian nations the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) on December 19 in the capital of Bangladesh Dhaka.
The purpose of this meeting was fostering insightful discussions, sharing knowledge, and initiating the development of strategies to mitigate and adapt to the adverse effects of climate change on these demographics.
According to the official statement published on December 19 by BIMSTEC, addressing the pressing global issue of climate change, the round-table delved into the unique challenges faced by women and girls, as well as other marginalized groups like people with disabilities while battling climate change.
Posting on social media platform X, the BIMSTEC wrote:
"UNOPS and #BIMSTEC organized a roundtable discussion on the "Impact of Climate Change on Women and Girls" in Dhaka on 19 December 2023."
The Chairman of Institute for Policy in Advisory and Governance Professor Munir Khasru addressed the event on the impact of climate change on women and girls while other experts shared the inspiring tales of women and girls navigating environmental change, health challenges faced by women and girls amidst climate change, and navigating livelihood disruptions in the face of climate change.
More than seventy participants including senior officials from the government of Bangladesh, representatives from the United Nations offices, diplomatic missions, private sector, and non-governmental organisations based in Dhaka attended the event.
